Indigestion is when you feel uncomfortable or have pain after eating. Indigestion is very common and most people have it from time to time. For some people it's very mild and occasional and may only happen after a large meal or particularly rich food. For others, it is very painful, and sometimes feels as if you are having a heart attack.

Indigestion isn't a disease or condition, but a collection of symptoms. The main symptom is pain is the chest, which is often called heartburn. Feeling bloated, uncomfortably full or having a lot of wind (burping) are other symptoms.

Indigestion can sometimes be a sign of a condition affecting the digestive system. If you get indigestion a lot, it is particularly painful.

The following are the most common symptoms of indigestion. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

Pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen

Belching and loud intestinal sounds

Nausea

Constipation

Poor appetite

Diarrhea

Flatulence

The symptoms of indigestion may resemble other medical conditions or problems. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis.

If the indigestion is accompanied by vomiting, weight loss or appetite loss, black tarry stools or blood in the vomit, severe pain the upper right abdomen, shortness of breath, sweating, or radiating pain, it may be an indication of a more serious problem. Contact your physician immediately.

Indigestion has many causes, including:

Stomach cancer (rare)

Gastroparesis

Stomach infections

Irritable bowel syndrome

Estrogen and oral contraceptives

Steroid medications

Certain antibiotics

Lifestyle:

Eating too much, eating too fast, eating high-fat foods or eating during stressful situations

Stress and fatigue

Indigestion is not caused by excess stomach acid.

Swallowing excessive air when eating may increase the symptoms of belching and bloating, which are often associated with indigestion.

Diagnosis of Indigestion

If you are experiencing symptoms of indigestion, make an appointment to see your doctor to rule out a more serious condition. Because indigestion is such a broad term, it is helpful to provide your doctor with a precise description of the discomfort you are experiencing. In describing the symptoms, try to define where in the abdomen the discomfort usually occurs. Simply reporting pain in the stomach is not detailed enough for your doctor to help identify and treat your problem.

First, your doctor must rule out any underlying conditions. Your doctor may perform several blood tests and you may have X-rays of the stomach or small intestine. Your doctor may also use an instrument to look closely at the inside of the stomach, a procedure called an upper endoscopy. An endoscope, a flexible tube that contains a light and a camera to produce images from inside the body, is used in this procedure.

Indigestion Prevention

Some people can eat anything and they never get upset stomachs. But other people are more sensitive to food and they might find certain ones just don't agree with them. If you discover one of these foods, it's best not to eat a lot of them or skip them entirely.

In addition to avoiding problem foods, it's a good idea to eat several smaller meals instead of a couple really big ones. Here are some other tips to prevent indigestion:

As much as possible, avoid fatty, greasy foods, like fries and burgers.

Avoid too much chocolate or too many citrus fruits Eat slowly.

Don't smoke - or don't start smoking!

Find ways to relax and decrease stress.

Give your body a chance to digest food. Don't eat a huge meal and immediately go to sports practice. Try to eat at least an hour beforehand, or eat afterward.

You might do all these things, but still get indigestion once in a while.

Indigestion Treatment / Cure

Treatment depends on what is causing indigestion. For most mild cases of indigestion, making simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can help. This means eating small, regular meals, reducing the amount of fat in your diet, and avoiding foods that you know trigger symptoms, such as spicy or rich foods. You should also cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink and stop smoking. Managing stress better and sleeping slightly propped up on two pillows can also help.

Sometimes your doctor may recommend making changes to your current medication if they think that is causing the problem. (You should not stop taking any medication without consulting your GP first).

You can buy a range of non-prescription medicines from your pharmacy, including:

Antacids are useful for occasional bouts of indigestion, and can be taken as and when you need them. Some are available on prescription.

H2 Antagonists: This group of drugs is more powerful than antacids and useful if antacids don't work. They work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Higher strength doses are available on prescription.

Home Remedy of Indigestion

LEMON: Mix a tablespoon of lemon juice in a cup of hot water before a meal to prevent acid indigestion.

GARLIC : Add three drops of garlic oil to a half a cup of soya oil and rub onto the stomach after food.

HERBAL TEA: Drink an herbal tea of mint, raspberry, camomile and blackberry.

GINGER: Drink one cup of ginger tea after meals to promote a good digestion and for heartburn, etc.

PEPPERMINT: Peppermint is a good for indigestion. Those who are prone to heartburn may try peppermint tea. It will help indigestion with out causing heartburn.

CAROM SEEDS: Mix 2 pinches of rock salt and 1/2 tsp carom seeds (ajwain). Chew it and wash it down with water for upset stomach or indigestion.

BASIL: Mix 5-6 chopped basil (tulsi) leaves, 1/4 tsp sea salt, some black pepper in 3 Tbsp of curd, and eat it. Repeat this 4 times a day for one week for complete reconditioning of stomach

General Home Remedy

Do not eat to full stomach

Drink fluids in small amounts

Do not hurry through your meal, eat slowly and chew the food thoroughly

Avoid alcohol, coffee, spices and oily food.

Take adequate physical exercise

Recognize and deal with situations that cause emotional stress.

Avoid the factors that you know lead to indigestion.

Take antacids or half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water.

CALL THE DOCTOR

Your symptoms last longer than a few days

The pattern of indigestion symptoms changes noticeably

You have sudden, severe abdominal pain

You have unexplained weight loss

You vomit blood or pass blood in the stool

You have jaundice (yellow coloring of the skin and eyes)

Symptoms include jaw pain, chest pain, back pain, profuse sweating, anxiety, or a feeling of impending doom
